Termites

Termite Identification & Prevention

What are termites?

Termites are small insects known for their wood-chewing activities and the destruction they can cause by tunneling through human structures. They grow between half an inch and an inch long, are tan or light brown, and have soft, flat bodies. Termites live in colonies that are either underground or in wood above ground, and there are distinct roles for reproductive, solider, and worker termites in each colony. Though there are many different termite species around today, subterranean termites are one of the most common and the most destructive.

Are termites dangerous?

While termites don’t transmit diseases to humans, bring pathogens into homes or businesses, or bite humans, they are still quite dangerous. Termites chew through the internal wooden structures of properties, hollowing out wood and causing costly damages. Over time, a termite infestation can lead to the risk of structural collapse and severe, dangerous damage to your home or business. The sooner termite removal is complete on your property, the better your chances of avoiding a major disaster.

Why do I have a termite problem?

Termites are often attracted to properties with lots of outdoor harborage areas to hide or nest in, moist or humid conditions, and easy access to internal wooden structures or outdoor areas with piles of debris or wood. One of the easiest at-home termite treatments for your property is reducing the factors that attract these pests in the first place.

Where will I find termites?

Outside, termites will be mostly underground; mud tubes around your property may indicate their presence. Once they invade interior areas, signs of termites are likely to be seen around windows, doors, and baseboards. Shed wings, termite frass, and destroyed or damaged wood all indicate a termite problem on your property.

How can I prevent termites in the future?

The following termite prevention tips can help you keep termites far away from your property in the future.

  • Reduce soil-to-wood access around your property’s foundation or other applicable areas by laying a gravel barrier or something similar. Doing this makes it more difficult for termites to infiltrate interior areas.
  • Clear outdoor areas of debris piles and long grasses in addition to elevating woodpiles so termites can invade them.
  • Seal up cracks around your property’s windows, doors, and foundation to prevent termites from sneaking inside through these gaps.
  • Address moisture issues and leaks around both interior and exterior areas to stop humid conditions or excess pools of water from attracting termites.
  • Keep windows and doors closed when possible, and install sturdy window and door screens that keep out swarming termites.
